## About the Treatment

A pilonidal cyst is a cavity under the skin in the tailbone area, between the buttocks, caused by hair penetrating the skin, which triggers inflammation, pain, discharge and recurrent abscesses. It mainly affects young adults and people who sit for long hours. During an acute flare, the abscess is drained; the definitive treatment is surgery, which removes the cyst and the tracts along with the hair. There are different techniques — from removal with off-midline closure, which heals better, to open healing and flap procedures, for more extensive or recurrent cases. The choice takes into account the size of the lesion and the patient's history. Postoperative care requires wound care and, afterward, removing hair from the area helps prevent the problem from recurring.
