## About the Treatment

An incisional hernia develops at the scar of a previous abdominal surgery — such as a C-section, hysterectomy or laparotomy — when the wall does not heal with enough strength. It forms a bulge that grows over time and can cause pain, discomfort and, in some cases, incarceration. Factors such as wound infection, obesity, smoking, diabetes and early strain after surgery increase the risk. Repair involves repositioning the contents and reinforcing the wall with mesh, by laparoscopy or the open technique, depending on the size and location of the hernia. Preoperative assessment includes imaging studies to plan the surgery and control factors that hinder healing.
