## About the Treatment

An inguinal hernia is the protrusion of part of the abdominal contents through a weak point in the wall, in the groin area, forming a bulge that increases with coughing, lifting weight or standing, and that can be painful. In women, it must be distinguished from a femoral hernia, which is more frequent in them and carries a higher risk of complications. Surgery is the only definitive treatment and is indicated to prevent incarceration — when the contents become trapped and require emergency surgery. Repair can be performed by laparoscopy, with small incisions and faster recovery, or by the conventional technique, both with mesh placement to reinforce the wall and reduce recurrence. The technique is chosen based on the type of hernia and each patient's profile.
