## What it is

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition that causes persistent redness in the center of the face, flushing episodes, visible blood vessels, and in some cases pimple-like lesions, a burning sensation and skin sensitivity. It is most common in fair-skinned women between the ages of 30 and 50 and is often mistaken for acne or an allergy, which delays proper treatment. At Femi Saúde, Dr. Ana Kappes identifies the rosacea subtype, maps out each patient's triggers, and puts together a plan that combines gentle skin care, topical or oral medications and, when indicated, laser and intense pulsed light for the vessels and redness.

## Most common symptoms

- Persistent redness in the center of the face
- Flushing episodes triggered by heat or emotion
- Visible blood vessels on the cheeks and nose
- Papules and pustules resembling pimples
- Stinging, burning or a tight feeling in the skin
- Dry, irritated or red eyes
- Thickening of the nose skin in advanced cases

## Causes and risk factors

- Genetic predisposition and fair skin
- Altered regulation of blood vessels
- Exaggerated inflammatory response of the skin
- Higher numbers of Demodex mites
- Triggers such as sun, heat, alcohol and spicy foods

## How it is diagnosed

The diagnosis of rosacea is clinical, based on the features and distribution of the lesions and a history of recurring flushing. The dermatologist distinguishes rosacea from acne, seborrheic dermatitis, lupus and contact dermatitis, and classifies the predominant subtype: vascular, papulopustular, phymatous or ocular. Dermoscopy helps visualize the dilated vessels. There is no specific blood test, but in atypical cases or with systemic symptoms, additional tests may be requested to rule out other conditions. Mapping individual triggers is part of the initial evaluation.

## How we treat it at Femi Saúde

Treatment starts with a gentle cleansing routine, moisturizing and sunscreen suited to sensitive skin, along with avoiding identified triggers. For inflammatory lesions, creams with metronidazole, ivermectin or azelaic acid are used, and in more severe cases, oral antibiotics at anti-inflammatory doses. Diffuse redness can be reduced with topical vasoconstrictor medications, and visible blood vessels respond well to laser or intense pulsed light over a series of sessions. In ocular cases, care is coordinated with ophthalmology. Based on the subtype and the response, the dermatology team at Femi Saúde adjusts the plan over time to keep the skin stable.

## When to see a gynecologist

See your dermatologist if facial redness has become constant, if flushing episodes come with a burning sensation, if visible blood vessels or pimple-like lesions have appeared that do not improve with acne products, or if your eyes are frequently irritated. Early treatment helps prevent progression to harder-to-control forms and preserves quality of life.
