## About the Treatment

Botulinum toxin injection is an option for chronic anal fissure that has not healed with ointments and clinical measures. The fissure keeps the internal anal sphincter contracted, which reduces local blood flow and prevents healing; the toxin causes a temporary relaxation of this muscle for about two to three months, long enough for the wound to close in most cases. The injection is given in the office, under local anesthesia, in just a few minutes, and preserves sphincter function, making it a less invasive alternative to sphincterotomy.
