Breast Self-Exam and Warning Signs
Knowing your own body to notice changes
About the Treatment
Breast self-exam does not replace screening exams, but self-awareness is an important ally: many changes are first noticed by women themselves in daily life. The current recommendation is to observe and touch the breasts regularly, without a rigid technique, preferably a few days after menstruation, in order to recognize what is usual and notice changes. Signs that deserve evaluation include a new lump or area of firmness, a change in the size or shape of a breast, skin retraction or redness, an orange-peel appearance, a change or retraction of the nipple, spontaneous discharge — especially if bloody or from only one side — and lumps in the armpit. During the consultation, the breast specialist guides breast self-awareness and evaluates any finding with a clinical exam and imaging exams.
