Breast Fine-Needle Aspiration and Biopsy
Ultrasound-guided diagnosis of lumps and cysts
About the Treatment
When an imaging exam shows a change that needs to be clarified, a puncture or biopsy allows material to be collected for analysis to determine whether the lesion is benign. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) empties cysts and collects cells; core needle biopsy removes small fragments of the lump for histopathological examination, which is the standard for diagnosis. Both are performed at the clinic, guided by ultrasound, under local anesthesia, in about 20 to 30 minutes, and the patient returns to her activities the same day, with simple care. The result is discussed in a consultation with the breast specialist, who determines the approach: follow-up, surgical removal, or referral for specialized treatment, when necessary.
