Screening with Mammography
When to start, frequency and interpreting the result
About the Treatment
Mammography is the main exam for breast cancer screening, able to identify changes before they are palpable, when the chances of treatment are greater. Brazilian societies of mastology and radiology recommend the exam annually from age 40 for women without risk factors; those with a significant family history or other factors may need to start earlier, with an individualized plan. At Femi Saúde, the breast specialist orders the mammogram, advises on preparation, interprets the report — including the BI-RADS classification — and determines the next steps: repeat in one year, complement with ultrasound or MRI, or investigate with a biopsy. Dense breasts, common in younger women, may require ultrasound as a complement.
