Breast Ultrasound
Assessment of lumps, cysts and dense breasts
About the Treatment
Breast ultrasound uses sound waves, without radiation, to assess the breasts. It is the exam of choice for young women, and pregnant and breastfeeding women, and it complements mammography in dense breasts, when glandular tissue can hide changes. It differentiates solid lumps from fluid-filled cysts, assesses localized pain, discharge and changes noticed on the clinical exam, and guides punctures and biopsies. At Femi Saúde, the exam is performed at the clinic itself, which allows the finding to be correlated with the breast specialist's assessment in the same visit. The result also receives a BI-RADS classification, which indicates whether the change can simply be monitored or needs to be investigated.
