About the Treatment

A sebaceous cyst (epidermoid cyst) is a benign lump under the skin, formed by a capsule that accumulates keratin and sebum. It commonly appears on the scalp, face, neck, back and genital area, and can become inflamed, painful and drain fluid. Surgical removal is indicated when the cyst grows, becomes inflamed frequently or is cosmetically bothersome. Under local anesthesia, the cyst is removed whole, together with the capsule, which reduces the chance of recurrence; a CO₂ laser can be used for a more precise incision and a more comfortable recovery. The procedure takes about 30 minutes, is performed in the office, and the tissue can be sent for analysis. Inflamed cysts or those with an abscess may need drainage before definitive removal.
