Preparing for a healthy pregnancy

About the Treatment

The preconception consultation is care provided before pregnancy, ideally three to six months before a woman stops using contraceptive methods. During it, the gynecologist assesses general health, reviews existing conditions and medications in use, updates the Pap smear and vaccinations, orders tests — such as blood typing, screening for infections and blood glucose — and provides guidance on folic acid supplementation, which helps prevent neural tube defects in the baby. Habits such as diet, physical activity, weight and alcohol and tobacco use are also discussed, along with the fertile window and when to seek further investigation if pregnancy takes longer than expected. This preparation contributes to a healthier pregnancy for both mother and baby.
