About the Treatment

Stress urinary incontinence is the leakage of urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing, lifting weight or exercising. When conservative treatments — such as pelvic floor physical therapy and laser — are not sufficient, surgery may be indicated. The most commonly used technique is the mid-urethral sling, a small strip of material placed under the urethra to provide support, using minimal incisions through the vaginal route. The procedure is performed in a hospital setting, under anesthesia, and recovery is usually fast. The indication depends on a urogynecological evaluation, which may include tests such as a urodynamic study.
