Genital Prolapse Repair
Treatment for a dropped bladder or uterus
About the Treatment
Genital prolapse occurs when the muscles and ligaments that support the pelvic organs weaken, causing the bladder, uterus or rectum to descend toward the vagina — a condition popularly known as a "dropped bladder" or "dropped uterus." It is more common after childbirth, with aging and during menopause, and can cause a sensation of heaviness or a "bulge" in the vagina, difficulty urinating or having a bowel movement, urinary leakage and discomfort during intercourse. In mild cases, pelvic physical therapy and pessaries may be recommended; when symptoms affect quality of life, surgery repositions the organs and reinforces the supporting structures, usually via the vaginal route. The technique is chosen according to the type and degree of prolapse, after a urogynecological assessment.
