About the Treatment

An abscess is a collection of pus under the skin, caused by a bacterial infection — often starting from an ingrown hair, an inflamed sebaceous cyst or a small wound. It causes a red, warm, firm and very painful lump, sometimes with fever. Antibiotics alone usually do not resolve it: drainage is needed. Under local anesthesia, a small incision is made to empty and clean the cavity; in some cases, a drain is placed for a few days. Pain usually eases soon after drainage. The patient receives guidance on dressings, warning signs and, when indicated, antibiotics. Recurrent abscesses warrant investigation of the underlying cause, such as cysts or hidradenitis.
