About the Treatment

A lipoma is a benign tumor made up of fat cells, which grows slowly under the skin and forms a soft, mobile, usually painless lump. It is most common on the back, shoulders, arms, thighs and abdomen. Removal is indicated when the lipoma grows, causes pain or discomfort, interferes with movement or is cosmetically bothersome — or when there is diagnostic doubt. Under local anesthesia, the lump is removed through a small incision and the tissue is sent for analysis. Larger or deeper lipomas may require a hospital setting. The procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, with a quick return to activities and simple scar care.
