About the Treatment

An umbilical hernia arises from a weakness in the abdominal wall at the navel, and is common in women after pregnancy, with weight gain or repeated strain. It appears as a bulge at the navel, which can be painful when coughing, having a bowel movement or lifting weight, and tends to increase over time. Surgery is indicated when there are symptoms, growth or a risk of incarceration, and consists of repositioning the contents and closing the defect; in larger hernias, a mesh reinforces the wall. It can be performed through a small incision at the navel or by laparoscopy, with anesthesia suited to the case, and usually allows a quick discharge. When there is associated abdominal diastasis, the repair can be planned together.
