Oophoroplasty is surgery performed on the ovary to treat a condition while preserving healthy ovarian tissue — for example, when removing cysts, endometriomas or benign tumors. Preserving the ovary is important to maintain hormone production and fertility, especially in young women or those who wish to become pregnant. In most cases, the procedure is performed by laparoscopy, with small incisions, less pain and faster recovery, in a hospital setting. The indication is determined after a consultation and imaging exams, such as ultrasound.
